Embracing the Journey: Overcoming Self-Expectations in Creative Endeavors
Welcome to episode 5 of the Creative Train podcast! Today we're going to talk about something that everybody who's done anything new in their life has faced- it's your expectations of yourself.
This can apply to teaching as well because not all great doers are great teachers, simply relaying information is often not enough. Why does it seem almost impossible to achieve that elusive "flow" when we set about doing any new thing, whether it's a sport, craft, music or learning to cook?
As an adult beginning anything new, you're coming at the situation already pretty well established in your career. There is pride in those accomplishments, but the desire for a creative challenge can be daunting. It's really hard to prioritize practice because it makes you feel awkward, but you have to be willing to suck at it for a while!
This episode discusses the differences between children and adults in learning new skills, the importance of relaxing your inner critic, and balancing expectations with the reality of being a beginner. You'll hear a pep talk on why it's okay to struggle and how to embrace the learning process to eventually find your flow.
